The red fern grew in Japan, which is not really in China.

When I arrived home from my around-the-world adventure last year, I felt like I knew what to do with my life. I’d been ashamed in Cambodia that I knew little about the holocaust there even though it happened in my very lifetime. Assuming other Americans my age were in a similar boat, I felt like my life’s purpose should be to write, the goal being to use humor to tell the world about the world.

And then I started writing about Snooki and poo instead.

But I am again renewed in my passion after seeing this gem from Lamebook:

I’d like to first comment about how someone put a lot of time and thought into a Facebook app that tells you what kind of Asian you are. Umm…. actually, I’d like to not comment because I immediately imagine it asks racist questions like, ‘Do your parents own a convenience store, nail salon, or nothing because the Communist government won’t let them?’ Sorry. I know. Horrible. But, come on! What kind of app is that?

Anyway, the more pressing issue is the chick who thinks that Japanese people are from China.
The world needs help, my friends. Lots of help.

But based on this guy’s Facebook profile,

it seems that those who don’t read are kind of proud of it. If the only book I’d ever read was on the required list in junior high, I probably wouldn’t tell anybody. (But I’d also give books another chance. I mean… Where the Red Fern Grows? The only book? I can see why you may have been turned off, my friend, but at least try another. Read Maus if you have to. Geesh. [that’s a comic book- get it?])

Now I’ve concluded that if I try to write more about the world, the people who need to read it won’t. Therefore, back to Snooki. I kind of miss her these days. And, OMG, let’s all plan a trip to China for sushi and kimonos.

I am driven crazy by those that think every Hispanic is a Mexican and an illegal alien.

"I think I'm turning Japanese" takes on a whole new meaning.

H.M.R. November 16, 2010 at 9:56 am

Wait, I'm confused. If Japanese people live in China, who the hell is living in Japan? Koreans?

Hollye Dexter November 16, 2010 at 10:24 am

Oh America – the land of mediocrity.
How you break my heart anew each day…

OMG! I've met that woman's twin! Just after college, a good friend of mine was preparing to leave for a year-long teaching position in Japan. We went out to celebrate before she left. Bartender-lady asks what we're celebrating. Upon hearing that my friend is heading to Japan, bartender-lady says, "A whole year in Japan? Wow, I hope you like Chinese food!"

laurenne November 16, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Yana! I guess it's a common thing… My mom's a teacher and her students thought Japan is in China too.
I don't get ittttt!

But, as Incredible Woody has mentioned, the biggest shocker is when I tell people I am Spanish and they ask, "Oh, from what part of Mexico."

HUH!?

HMR – ha! Yes, and Kim Jung Il is Italian.

Hollye – go celebrate your best day ever and forget about Americans.

Jimmy – ha. They should change it to 'I think I'm turning Japanese which is a person in Japan which is a country of it's own. I really think so.' Just to be clear.

There will always be people ignorant of other cultures, but you would think that they would at least have a basic understanding for things like Japan not being a part of China. For myself, I can understand people getting Taiwan confused with China, but I hate it when they refer to me as Thai.

On another note, technically speaking, kimonos and sushi actually did originate in China, but for some reason, Japan gets the credit for it.

I'm currently planning a trip to Canada to visit an American. But one day, I'd love to see Asia. Because all Asians are sexually attracted to me. And because I've heard the Great Wall is spectacular. I think it's in the Philippines.

I'm half Japanese and so is my sister. She lives in China and I visited her there last summer. Imagine the confusion. Oh and during WW II, the Chinese wore buttons that said I am Chinese so they wouldn't be thrown into camps or be subject to "Go home, Jap" racial slurs. So nice of them to try to clear things up.

Oh, and when I took that quiz it said I was Caucasian too.

There's a play called "Avenue Q" where they sing about how everyone's a little bit racist. Maybe so, but ignorant racism is infuriating.
PS – I have always wanted to visit Japan.
PPS – If we could only merge Snooki entertainment with international education, maybe people would know that Japan isn't in China. Maybe she should say that on Jersey Shore.

Let's just say that one time my friends and I got in a huge argument if being Indian was being Asian with someone blurting out, "This is a ridiculous conversation. India is not even in ASIA!"

Shut up Mom!

Anyways, As a fellow Asian I would like to salute, err, I mean bow to my fellow Asians to the north. Konichiwa! I don't know what that means, that's the only Asian type word I know. Oh and also Thankyoucomeagain. They teach us that in Dot Not Feather class.

I applaud your dedication to a noble cause. After all, Snooki and poo won't write about themselves, will they?
